On Monday, April 27 at 7:30pm at Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Peter Norton Symphony Space, Cutting Edge Concerts presents a staged workshop performance of Clara, an opera inspired by the life of Clara Schumann, with music by Victoria Bond and libretto by Barbara Zinn Krieger.

The opera focuses on Clara Schumann's tormented relationship with her father, her tempestuous romance with Robert Schumann and her struggle to balance her family obligations with her brilliant career. Clara Schumann's independent travels as a star performer overturned 19th-century stereotypes of a woman's role. More on the life of Clara Schumann can be found below.

"Her life reminded me of my own mother, a child prodigy, whose stormy studies with her father and travels as a virtuoso pianist gave me great insight into the struggles that Clara had to endure," says Bond. "The story of Clara's romance with Robert Schumann was made for opera, as was Robert's tragic end."

Conducted by Victoria Bond and directed by the librettist, Barbara Zinn Krieger, the performance features Gramercy Trio, and vocalists Meredith Mecum, Benjamin Bloomfield, Robert Osborne, Paul Han, Marisan Corsino, Yiselle Blum, and Joseph Eletto. Renowned Metropolitan opera star Martina Arroyo serves as artistic adviser for the production.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $30 the day of the performance. A special subscription package for all three concerts is available for $39 (must add tickets for all three concerts to cart to see discount). Tickets are available online at symphonyspace.org, by calling (212) 864-5400, or at the Symphony Space box office.

claraAbout Clara Schumann

Clara Schumann (born Clara Wieck) achieved great fame as a concert pianist in a time when most women were tied to their domestic duties. From the age of five, Clara's father Frederick Wieck devoted all of his energies into turning her into a full-blown piano prodigy. When Robert Schumann came to study with Wieck, who was an esteemed piano teacher, Robert and Clara fell in love and became secretly engaged, which her father vehemently opposed. After a bitter estrangement between father and daughter, the couple was married.

Despite the difficulties and societal pressures, Clara continued to perform while raising a family. After Robert's suicide attempt in 1854, Schumann was admitted to a mental asylum, where he died two years later. A woman of great strength, Clara continued to perform and honor her husband by playing his music.
