On Friday, April 21, 8:00 pm at the Baruch Performing Arts Center the "exacting and sensitive" (Boston Globe) vocal/instrumental group Cantata Profana explores the struggle to express the inexpressible. The program, featuring mezzo-soprano Annie Rosen, cellist Hannah Collins and pianist Lee Dionne, is at Baruch Performing Arts Center's acoustically stunning Engelman Recital Hall at Baruch College, E. 25th Street between 3rd and Lexington Avenues. Ticket information is below.
The mezzo-soprano Annie Rosen - praised by Opera News for her "rich, vibrant tone" - portrays two lll-fated heroines in Handel's La Lucrezia and Shostakovich's Song of Ophelia, offering contrasting depictions of madness and plighted love. Beethoven's sublime An die ferne Geliebte addresses an immortal beloved at an impossible distance. Modern offerings from Reena Esmail and Tonia Ko delve further into the subject of distance, literal and figurative. Esmail's work - a world premiere - takes its texts from haikus written between Japanese monks, each sequestered in his own mountain solitude. Ko's Between Us finds a startlingly affecting language in a musical exploration of stuttering.
Praised as everything from "a stylish early-music ensemble" that plays "with diligent attention to period style,"to having an appropriately loose, folksy vigor" (NY Times), Cantata Profana is a vocal and instrumental ensemble dedicated to bringing diverse and eclectic masterpieces together and presenting them with an engaging sense of theatricality. As Zachary Woolfe of The New York Times recently wrote, "While its theatrical bent is a constant, Cantata Profana's approach to the repertory is admirably varied and indefinable.
The performance is on Friday, April 21 at 8:00 pm at the Baruch Performing Arts Center's Engelman Recital Hall. Tickets are $35 ($15 for students) and are available online, by phone at (212) 352-3101 or in person at the box office. The concert is presented in honor of Nathan Ackerman.
