2017 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in New York State. To celebrate, on November 18th, the Rochester Lyric Opera and the Susan B. Anthony Society present Victoria Bond’s seething opera of ambition and betrayal, Mrs. President.

The story of a woman’s visionary struggle to defy history and become the first female President of the United States is “ripe for opera… It is music that overflows with lyricism and passion and is set to an intensely poetic and dramatic libretto,” wrote the East Hampton Star. The New York Times proclaimed “Victoria Bond has struck gold in the story of Victoria Woodhull,”

In 19th century America, women didn’t have the right to vote, much less run for president. But in 1872, Victoria Woodhull did just that. The real-life Victoria Woodhull’s story reads like grand opera. Her run for president was just the tip of the iceberg. She was a clairvoyant, newspaper publisher, jailbird, stockbroker and proponent of free love. Despite her courage and persistence, Woodhull was viciously attacked by the conservative society in which she lived, a movement which was spear-headed by the powerful and influential preacher Henry Ward Beecher. Woodhull spent Election Day in prison, jailed for revealing Beecher’s secret life, a sex scandal that ignited the public and the press.

Reprising her triumphant portrayal of the opera’s radical heroine in New York and Anchorage Alaska, dramatic soprano Valerie Bernhardt heads the cast in Rochester Lyric Opera’s semi-staged production. Victoria Bond conducts. Details are below, and more information is at Rochester Lyric Theatre, MrsPresidentTheOpera.com and VictoriaBond.com.
