Featuring contemplative works by Bach, Hovhaness, Tavener, and Small's own Reflections on the Book of Hours

"A Golden Silence" -- The Washington Post

Pianist and composer Haskell Small has long been fascinated with music that is primarily quiet, spacious and mystical. As part of his ongoing concert series, "Journeys in Silence", Small has performed solo and chamber programs around the world. In November, 2017 he brings his 'penchant for quietude' to the West Coast of North America.

From November 6-18, Small shares his most recent composition, A Journey in Silence: Reflections on the Book of Hours with audiences from Santa Cruz, CA to Vancouver, BC. Complete details below. Inspired by a devotional book popular in the Middle Ages, Book of Hours is the third in Small's "Journeys in Silence" series. Small's composition features the sounds of chant and bells as it explores the various moods of the monastic day.

Composer and pianist Haskell Small has earned accolades for his compositions, which "abound in expressive content" (Records International) and show his "...rich imagination as a composer and an assured mastery of forms" (The Washington Post); and for his performances, for which he was praised by England's Musical Times for his "dazzlingly prodigious technique." His discography of over a dozen recordings and his frequent national and international tours have firmly established Small's stellar artistic reputation around the world.

On November 6, the first stop on Mr. Small's tour, The Abbey of New Clairvaux (26240 7th St, Vina, CA 96092), so perfectly captures the essence of Book of Hours that one could easily be convinced that it was the original inspiration. The Abbey of New Clairvaux is a Trappists monastery located in the reassembled 800-year old Santa Maria de Ovila monastery that once stood in Trillo, Guadalajara, Spain.

The tour continues on November 10 with a visit to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Seattle (15 W Roy St., admission by free will donation). Mr. Small then travels to Wenatchee, WA for a performance at Grace Lutheran Church (free-will offering) on November 11. He performs at Vancouver, BC's First Lutheran Church on November 13, and at the Bethlehem Center in Nanaimo, BC on November 14. On November 16, Haskell Small performs on the Distinguished Artists Concert and Lecture Series at Peace United Church (900 High St.) in Santa Cruz. And on November 18, the final concert of the tour is at The Flight Deck (1540 Broadway) in Oakland, CA. More details and ticketing information below.
