Brass for Uncommon Times
(Brian Kaufman, conductor)
Ensemble
Brass for Uncommon Times is an all-star collective of 40 top-notch brass and percussion performers. Its self-titled debut album features works that reflect struggle, uncertainty, and celebration of our time, many of them world premiere recordings.
Compositions range from Valerie Coleman’s “Fanfare for Uncommon Times” — written in response to the overlapping crises of the pandemic and the racial unrest of 2020 — to Barbara York’s Tuba Concerto “Wars and Rumors of War,” (featuring internationally renowned soloist Velvet Brown) and Félix Mendoza’s rousing “Guerra de Secciones,” for brass and percussion, which showcases the rhythms and sounds of Venezuela.
